Direct Advocacy Legal Advocate (Full-time)
This position will require 35 hours of work per week at the TRAC office in Downtown Vancouver.
Responsibilities
This position will involve the following key tasks:
- conducting merit assessments of potential cases
- assisting clients with the gathering, preparation, and submission of evidence
- critically analyzing legislation and case law in order to prepare effective legal arguments
- representing clients at Residential Tenancy Branch dispute resolution hearings
- negotiating settlements with landlords outside of the formal dispute resolution process
- completing regular file reviews with TRAC’s supervising lawyer
- maintaining organized and confidential case files
This position may also involve other work, as required by the Executive Director and Supervising Lawyer, including but not limited to:
- providing legal information and referrals through the Tenant Infoline and Housing Navigation Program
- facilitating workshops and webinars for tenants and advocates
- working with government to provide legislative and policy recommendations
- assisting with the development of Public Legal Education and Information resources
- assisting with the promotion and/or distribution of TRAC resources
- assisting with day-to-day administrative tasks
Skills and Knowledge Required
- Expert knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Act, principles of administrative law, and the law of evidence
- Experience representing clients at Residential Tenancy Branch dispute resolution hearings
- Passion for social justice and tenants’ rights
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of clients
- Ability to meet strict deadlines while managing multiple cases
- Existing profile in the social justice legal community is an asset
Compensation
- $32 – $36 per hour depending on experience
- Extended Health and Dental Benefits after 3 months
- 4% RRSP Contribution Benefit after 3 months
- 3 weeks vacation in 1st year, 4 weeks in 2nd year, 5 weeks in 3rd year and beyond
- Paid days off between Christmas and New Year’s

Tenant Infoline Legal Advocate
This position will require 12-20 hours of remote work per week. If interested, the successful applicant may have limited access to a workstation at the TRAC office in Downtown Vancouver.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility for this position will be providing legal information and referral services through TRAC’s Tenant Infoline phone service.
Skills and Knowledge Required
- Expert knowledge of BC residential tenancy law and Residential Tenancy Branch dispute resolution policies and procedures*
- Expert knowledge of available referral options, such as other TRAC programs and available community resources
- Exceptional communication skills, including:
- the ability to communicate with diverse callers facing intersecting barriers
- the ability to explain complex legal concepts in plain language
- the ability to actively listen and respond with empathy
- Passion for social justice and tenant rights
- Experience answering calls from the public is an asset
- Existing profile in the social justice legal community is an asset
*TRAC will provide training to the successful applicant before requiring them to answer calls
Compensation
- $28.50 – 29.50 per hour depending on experience
- 3 weeks vacation in 1st year, 4 weeks in 2nd year, 5 weeks in 3rd year and beyond. Vacation time is prorated for part-time employees
- Paid days off between Christmas and New Year’s
